With Daylight Savings Time kicking off this first week of November, I found it most fitting to address time as a general theme. Structuring the content to fit within the guidelines of a preschool-1st grade education, this week’s theme focuses on time as a bigger picture.
Addressing the concept of seconds/minutes/hours/days, AM vs. PM, varying time zones, Daylight Saving Time, differences between analog and digital clocks, varying ways to tell time, parts of a clock, and more- the Time Theme covers it all. Additionally, by expanding upon the above ideas, basics of time in regards to telling time on the focus of the hour hand are also included.
Just as in previous themed weeks, the Time theme will include a specially designed curriculum catering to grades preschool-1st grade. Worksheets, talking points, daily schedule, book recommendations, and video links… you get it all here!
The Why Behind the Curriculum
After launching “Simply September’s Weekly Homeschool Themes” in early September, we are now officially going into month 3 of our themed curriculum! Sharing all the details on why I chose to supplement my kindergartner and preschooler’s virtual learning with a homeschool curriculum during this crazy year of 2020, you can find all the details behind my why and how here. You can also find and purchase all the themes offered so far by clicking here.
What’s Included in the Time Theme
Included in this week’s theme, you will receive:
- A daily schedule which breaks down which activities to do which day (schedule provides for one off day (pre-determined on Wednesday) but can be changed. Schedule also includes math/writing/reading activities daily, with a “Friday Fun” day for a themed game and craft (or to allow for another family member or friend to easily do the teaching). The daily schedule is fully hyperlinked to books and videos so you can simply click and go!
- Talking Points. This simple sheet builds off the lessons taught in the recommended books and videos. These notes help guide daily lessons and make sure you cover all the main points at this age appropriate level with these cheat sheet talking points. Choose to incorporate them into your morning meetings, or build off of them for bonus learning activities. Note: These points can be used for a “Pop Quiz” at the end of the week by turning the points into questions.
- Book recommendations pertaining to the theme. Linked to Amazon so you can purchase quickly if desired, or better yet, check out from your library!
- Video links pertaining to the theme. Direct YouTube links that incorporate age appropriate field trips, lessons, etc. All videos have been pre-screened to give you confidence in hitting “play” without watching prior. Exact video length for each provided on the schedule.
- Bonus activities should your child seek additional resources. This includes cooking activities, gross motor activities, crafts, field trips, and more.
- 13 custom worksheets
Modifications
As the title describes, this curriculum is designed for preschool-1st grade. Utilizing the same worksheet no matter the noted ages, you can easily modify to fit your child’s needs. Check out my Instagram here where I share story highlights for each themed week to demonstrate how I advance for my kindergartener and modify for my preschooler. [Under my Instagram bio you will find highlight bubbles that are saved per theme week.]
