Show of virtual hands how many did not picture Halloween 2020 looking as it will? If I didn’t need both hands to type, you better believe BOTH of mine would be in the air. Never did I ever think when the pandemic hit, that all these months later Halloween would be impacted too. However, here we are… and just as we’ve done for months… we will roll with the punches, accommodate as needed, and come out stronger on the other side (or so we hope ;)). With that said, what better way to celebrate Halloween 2020 than with some fun spins on classic DIY Halloween crafts!

A few months ago, I partnered with Ribbon by Design in the creation of endless DIY hair bows for my girls. (You can find the full post here). Falling in love with their high quality, creative designs (all created by a graphic designer in their own design studio), I knew that their Halloween line would be perfect for this year’s DIY Halloween crafts. Available in both grosgrain and satin, their ribbons are all printed in the USA using a dye sublimation process that not only makes them washable, but also provides the assurance they they will never fade, chip, or peel. Last, but not least… they truly could not be any kinder. I adore working with the women from Ribbon by Design.
Note: For all my fellow Etsy lovers- Ribbon by Design also is available via Etsy shop as well! Check them out here.
With just so many wonderful Halloween inspired ribbons, I simply couldn’t choose my favorites… so, I decided to incorporate 18 of them (listed at the end)!
Project #1- DIY Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bags
With the latest health suggestion to avoid close contact with candy distribution, I wanted a way to still be able to provide the classic treats to our closest family and friends. Additionally, I desired a way to limit the actual physical touch connected to the candy wrappers themselves- and so was born, DIY Halloween trick-or-treat bags that couldn’t be easier or cuter.
I decided to purchase small, sheer, black drawstring favor bags. Available in different sizes, quantities, and colors, I opted for the 100 pack of 3.9 x 4.7 inch bags in black. (You can find them here).
I then filled each little bag with several pieces of candy and pulled the drawstring tight. Lastly, I alternated the adorable Halloween ribbon from Ribbon by Design to tie them closed and add a festive flair.
These small DIY Halloween trick-or-treat bags will be perfect for setting on the porch of neighbors or leaving for loved ones. With limited physical contact of the candy wrappers once inside, the DIY Halloween craft doesn’t necessarily scream “Halloween 2020”, but it sure could.
Project #2- DIY Halloween Ribbon Garland
Looking for a fun way to decorate your porch, fireplace mantel, bookshelf, railings, etc. all in one? DIY Halloween ribbon garland is the perfect craft this holiday season! By utilizing all the fun Halloween ribbons from Ribbon by Design you can DIY one in no time!
Begin by cutting strips of ribbon approximately 5-8 inches long. I opted for estimates in cutting vs. true measurements as I wanted a more varied look. Next, connect two ends of ribbon together, then loop around (as shown below), and pull through. This will effectively create a knot on one side of the ribbon with the two free ends on the opposite side. This will also make a looped hole on the side closest to the knot.
Once all ribbons are cut and tied (I chose 6 per ribbon style with 18 ribbon styles total), it is time to choose your connection. I chose yarn, but the possibilities are endless (I’d recommend tweed if creating for outside). You will also want to measure your location prior to cutting of the rope/yarn (in my case I measured our fireplace mantle). Lastly, it is time to string the tied ribbons onto the yarn/rope in whatever pattern you desire (being sure to tie it off at the end so the last tied ribbon doesn’t slide off). I found it most effective to lay all piles out and then to pick my pattern prior to starting the stringing process.
Note: in order to expedite the process, I chose to utilize a yarn needle to more quickly thread.
There you have it! The perfect, fun, and unique DIY Halloween ribbon garland craft!
