If you are anything like me, you may find yourself with a bin full of picture frames for with you just can’t seem to part. Some with glass, some without. Broken backs, outdated style, etc. The reasons are endless why your frames may no longer be of use to you; however, you just can’t seem to throw them away. After all, you are confident the perfect DIY project will call for them in no time.
Well, you were right! Little did you know, those old frames have the perfect use as a DIY kids art display.
My children LOVE to be creative. And while I certainly embrace their passion for all things art, I often struggle to determine how to best display their masterpieces.
In an effort to combat the constant clutter I decided to turn an empty nook in my home into a DIY art gallery (you can check it out here). However, like any parent of a child who LOVES anything creative can attest to, even a DIY art gallery nook will soon start busting at the seams. So, I grew inspired to create yet another miniature kids art display, and I knew it was finally time to dig out my old frame collection in order to do so.
In no time, IÂ had used old frames to create the perfect kid’s art display in the hallway nearest my daughters’ bedrooms and the entire process couldn’t have been easier or more fun. Here is how I did it!
Supplies:
- Frames (With or without glass the frame will still work! If you don’t have old frames, you can simply check out your local dollar store for inexpensive frames.)
- Clothespins (I varied small and large clothespins for a more eclectic look.)
- Glue (I found hot glue to work best.)
- Cardstock paper (I chose white, but color can vary per your preference.)
- Plasti Dip Craft (Various colors available, Get yours at Amazon).
- Artwork (But of course, the most important part!)
Directions
- Start by digging out old frames. Whether or not they have glass, they are fully functional for this project.
- Begin taking the frames apart so that you are left with just the frame itself.
- Now move the frames to a well-ventilated area and place a surface underneath to prevent paint from transferring (I used a garbage bag.).
- Using the Plasti Dip Craft, make swiping motions back and forth covering the frames entirely (Don’t forget the outside and insides, but no need to do the back.).
- Allow the Plasti Dip Craft to dry. In a well-ventilated area, this took a couple of hours (note: I made a thick coat on all.).
- Use the glass to trace around the white (or whatever color selected) cardstock paper and cut it out. Then place the cardstock inside the frame as though you were framing a picture and put the frame back together.
- Using your glue, place a small amount on the back of a clothespin and attach it to the frame. You can attach it to the frame itself or lower on the glass.
- Now simply hang and attach art as desired!
Why Plasti Dip Craft?
You may be wondering why I chose Plasti Dip Craft instead of a traditional spray paint. The reason is quite simple. I LOVE working with Plasti Dip Craft (see my post where I used it to create the ultimate housewarming gift!). Furthermore, I love the fact that Plasti Dip Craft is peelable and creates a very unique rubber coating. In the event I opt to change out the colors of the frames or even switch back to the frames original coloring, all I have to do is peel off the paint! (To be honest… it is rather addicting and I had to challenge myself NOT to pick at it ;).)
