The plans are solidified and the date is creeping closer – you are soon to be hosting overnight guests! As excited as you are for that certain someone to come stay at your home, you can’t help but wonder whether or not you are prepared. Taking a deep breath, you remind yourself that the certain someone is a very close friend or family member and likely isn’t expecting hotel accommodations. However, that doesn’t (or shouldn’t) stop you from wanting to provide them with an enjoyable experience and hypothetical 5-star review. So, let’s dig in. Preparing for overnight guests doesn’t have to be hard as long as you don’t forget these simple steps!
1. A Clean Space
Nothing quite ruins an overnight experience quite like being surrounded by chaos and dirt. No, you don’t need to hire a cleaning service every time someone decides to pay you a welcomed visit, but show your guest that you have anxiously awaited their arrival by running the vacuum, cleaning the counters, washing the bathrooms, and decluttering the space.
2. Clean Linens
Again with the cleanliness, linens are no exception to the rule! Make sure your guest arrives to clean sheets and clean towels. Bonus points for having all towels laid out ahead of time so your guests can use them at their disposal without having to ask.
3. Check the Temperature
I don’t know about you, but if I’m too hot or too cold sleeping isn’t exactly enjoyable. So, it is best to be prepared. If it is the middle of summer, be sure to have a fan nearby in the event the air conditioning setting is not to your guest’s liking. Likewise, if it is the dead of winter, have a portable heater nearby or extra blankets to be used at your guest’s discretion.
4. Food/Snacks/Beverages
Time to stock the refrigerator. Find out what your guest most enjoys and purchase those items ahead of time. From beverages to snack foods, or main courses, the way to most people’s heart is through their belly.
5. Think Lighting
While you may be able to find your way around your house in complete darkness, chances are your guests are not half as familiar as you are. With that said, make sure the proper lighting is in place for middle-of-the-night bathroom runs. Something as simple as a nightlight in the bathroom will do the trick.
6. Wifi Password
As silly as it may sound, we live in a world where people want their wifi access and they want it pronto. So, don’t make them have to ask and then wait while you dig through your files. Instead, create a simple document and place it where they will be staying. You can also put it in a cute frame as an extra touch.
7. Anticipate What They May Have Forgotten
We’ve all been there. As much as we try to remember every last toiletry, we end up forgetting our toothpaste, a contact case, a toothbrush, or deodorant. So why not anticipate what your guest may have forgotten? By simply making a quick run to the travel section at your local store, you can provide your guest with a basket full of necessities. I can’t tell you how much this has come in handy over the years!
8. Pleasant Smells Only
Last, but certainly not least, it is time to address the smell of your home. If you are sitting there thinking, what smell?! you are not alone. In fact, we grow so accustomed to our surrounding smells that we often no longer notice a smell that someone else might. With that in mind, it is time to be proactive. My favorite scent to use is Renuzit® Snuggle® Oil Linen Escape. The reason I chose it is because it allows for a welcoming space while not overwhelming people with a scent that may be difficult for some guests to tolerate. Furthermore, I love that these oil jars are universal so I can use them in my mix-matched collection of both Glade and Air Wick warmers. You can find them at local Walmart too! Ibotta user?
