After reading the title of this post you may have speculated that I was talking about an elaborate piece of jewelry, or something of the sort. However, this could not be further from the truth. From as far back as our relationship goes, my husband and I have always pledged to take the DIY Valentine’s Day gift route. Partly for sentimental value, and let’s be honest, partly in an effort to save money… but either way, it is a tradition that has spanned over a decade. Over the years he has wowed me with jumbo sized cards made out of poster board, photo slideshows, CDs with a collection of our favorite songs, etc. While I’ve loved every single sentimental gift, by far the best Valentine’s Day gift I ever received from my husband was given last year.
Believe it or not, the gift was something that took very little time in it’s creation and required very little expense… yet it was the most genuine gift I could ask for.
Pink Sticky Notes
By simply taking one pack of pink sticky notes, my husband created the best Valentine’s Day gift ever.
On each individual sticky note, my husband wrote a different reason why he loved me, was proud of me, or was grateful for me. Then, he hid the sticky notes throughout the entire house (all done before I ever woke up in the morning).
After first being greeted on the bathroom mirror with a collection of sticky notes forming the shape of a heart, I loved being surrounded by his kind words. The sentimental touches continued as I went on with my day… a sticky note in my closet, one on my coffee cup in the cupboard, one on the coffee machine, one on my computer, one on my jacket, one on my purse, one on my steering wheel…. you get the idea.
As the day went on, I had a permanent smile etched on my face as I found every last hidden sticky note and internalized all the reasons he loved me.
Why This Was the Best Valentine’s Day Gift Ever
All too often in this busy, crazy life we go through the motions of the day to day routine without truly stopping to tell those we love most why we love and why we are so grateful for all they do. As cheesy as Valentine’s Day may be in theory, I love the fact that it reminds each of us to stop and focus on love, even if just for one day. While my husband is far from the type that fails to share his love and gratitude, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t adore seeing a collection of messages altogether at one time and on one day.
With that said, if you are looking for the absolute best Valentine’s Day gift to give your significant other this year, I can’t recommend this idea enough!
