If it seems like every other day you hear about a friend or family member buying a new house, then chances are you fall more into the majority than the minority. With the average person purchasing 3-4 homes over the course of their lifetime, it is not unlikely for you to be invited to several housewarming parties as a result.
While the invitation may originally bring about excitement, as the date approaches your excitement may turn into stress as you ponder what to bring for the ultimate housewarming gift.

A bottle of wine or champagne, fresh flowers, decorative art, a new picture frame, a gift certificate to the area, etc. are all wonderful options; however, they may lack originality and risk duplication at the party. So, what exactly can you gift that would not only be adored by the new home owner, but also allow for you to get creative in the process?
The ultimate housewarming gift is actually far more practical, fun, and easy to personalize than you may think!
The Answer!
Excite the new home owner with a housewarming gift basket that is packed full with fun essentials! Furthermore, allow your creative side to shine through by personalizing the contents with colors to match the home owner’s style or incorporated colors within the home.
Selected Materials:
- Gift basket
- Fun essentials (while you can tap into your creative side to decide what is best, I chose to include the following items that I found easiest to customize):
- Mason jar (to hold real or faux flowers)
- Glass jar for candle to be displayed
- Wine glass (to help toast the new home)
- Wine bottle (to fill up the wine glass of course ;))
- Coffee mug (with favorite k-cups included)
- Wood spoons (to be displayed or used in the home)
- Kitchen towel (to decorate the basket)
- Craft paint to personalize- my absolute favorite being the new Plasti Dip Craft (You can get yours at Amazon)
- I selected the following colors and enhancers for my tutorial: Lemon Yellow, Crisp White, Midnight Black, Silver Metalizer Enhancer, and White Pearlizer Enhancer. However, Plasti Dip Craft is also available in: Tin Roof Red, Pumpkin Spice, Gulf Coast Blue, Gator Green, and a Glossifier Enhancer.)
Why Plasti Dip Craft?
With so many paints on the market, you may be wondering why I chose Plasti Dip Craft for my paint of choice and exactly what it is. Plasti Dip Craft is an air-dry, specialty rubber coating. In fact, it is the original flexible, insulating, non-slip, durable rubber coating. Furthermore, aside from the fact that it comes in 7 colors and 3 enhancers and is very fun and easy to work with, I fell in love with it most due to the fact that it was easy to remove from most surfaces (i.e. it was peelable)!
While I wanted to gift my friend/family member/new home owner with a fun and functional gift, I didn’t want to assume they wanted to forever use the items with the colored paint I selected. Instead, I wanted to provide them with the option to use as presented (with colors intact), or simply peel off the paint and use it as originally designed. In a sense, think of the paint as a form of gift wrapping. You put in the extra effort to make sure the presented gift is beautiful and Plasti Dip allowed for just this to occur.
With that said, similar to most paints, Plasti Dip warns that it is for decorative purposes only and is NOT food safe. As a result, if planning to paint cups/bowls/plates/spoons, etc. in order to incorporate in your gift basket, it is important for the recipient of the gift to know that it should not come in contact with consumable food/beverages or be placed in a dishwasher or microwave. For this purpose, as shown below within the tutorial, I chose to only paint the handle portion of my cup/glass and informed the recipient accordingly. (shop now at Awarehousefull or find a retailer)
Tutorial:
- Let’s get started! First you will want to select your gift basket essentials.
- After purchasing your basket essentials and Plasti Dip colors/enhancers you will want to decide what portions of your items you want painted. From there you will want to mark off the non-painted portion accordingly so that spraying the Plasti Dip Craft only results in it coloring your selected area. While you can do this a number of ways, I chose to limit the amount of tape I used and used plastic bags to wrap around the opposite side, securing tightly with tape.
- I then went out to a well-ventilated area (i.e. outside) and began to spray the exposed areas of my gift basket items. Just as you would spray paint, make sure you are moving the can back and forth in overlapping patterns. Also, keep a distance of approximately 6-10 inches so that the Plasti Dip Craft is applied evenly. You may wish to apply a few coats (I chose two, but Plasti Dip recommends 3-4 coats for best results). Allow ample drying time (approximately 30 minutes) between coats.
- Once you are content with your coloring, complete the same pattern of spraying using your enhancers to create an even more fun finish.
- After allowing 4 hours for complete drying time, it is time to remove the bag/tape and reveal your final product! Note, because Plasti Dip is peelable, you will want to remove the tape and bag slowly to reveal an even finish/line without peeling off the paint itself. In fact, I found it best to use a scissors to cut a straight line where the tape met the Plasti Dip. Since the Plasti Dip can stretch, achieving a straight line required additional time and precise cutting to achieve.
- Don’t like the finished product? No worries! Simply peel off the Plasti Dip Craft and start again.
- Place your gift basket (now Plasti Dip painted) essentials within the gift basket. Add flowers, coffee, wine, a bow, etc. Your Ultimate Housewarming Gift is now complete!
Believe it or not, the entire process is really that easy. So easy (and fun) that you will fall in love with creating this ultimate housewarming gift in no time and insist on creating it time and time again for each and every housewarming party you attend!
