You have finished cleaning up after dinner, you have managed to get a load of laundry into the washing machine, you have helped your kiddos complete their homework, and you have packed lunches for tomorrow (even adding a little personalized note for your little ones). Overall, you are feeling like a “Supermom”, after a very long day. However, you are also feeling exhausted!
So, you kick back on the couch.
As you are sitting and relaxing (much deserved by the way!), you can’t help but to realize the fact that it appears as though a tornado has ripped through your home.
Your child’s toys are everywhere, except where they belong. Dishes are piled up in the sink. That dust is making it difficult to remember the color of your table. And bathrooms haven’t been cleaned in over a week.
After taking it all in, you breathe a sigh of relief and think to yourself, “don’t you worry mama, you’ve always got tomorrow to tackle it“. But just then, the phone rings. As you struggle to gain the energy to answer the call, your heart starts to race faster and faster as you hear the words coming out on the other end, “Hi you! We are in the neighborhood and thought we’d quickly swing by. We are about 10 minutes out, see you soon!”
As your heart beats faster, your mind begins to race! First you look at your torn and stained pajama pants that you quickly slipped into the minute you got home. Then you realize your top far from matches your bottoms.
So you fly to your bedroom, rifling through the hamper to put on the dirty clothes you just tore off only hours earlier. “Alright, I guess that is good enough”, you think to yourself. Then you remember your home is in disarray! You look at the clock, you have 8 minutes left until they will be knocking at your door and you go into panic mode. “Where do I possibly start?!”
If the above scenario is one you have unfortunately faced, then know you are not alone. In fact, I think this very well may be a standard rite of passage into motherhood. Luckily, with problems come solutions, and I am here to tell you that there is a way to “fake” a clean house fast when expecting guests in under 10 minutes!
So let’s get started with how to clean house fast.
1. Out of sight, out of mind.
Begin with everything on your countertops and sprawled upon your floors that don’t belong. I always recommend having bins and baskets (especially if you have young children and their accompanying toys) strategically placed around your home. Tossing every toy that you see in a basket gives it an organized look, even if it is anything but. When the baskets are full (or the items aren’t toy related), it is time to fill open cabinets, drawers, and closets. Guests shouldn’t be rifling through these places (if they are, then perhaps skip this entire list and politely decline their offer next time ;)). The items don’t have to be organized, they just need to be out of sight. You can organize at a later time.
2. The bathroom.
You don’t need to clean every bathroom you have at this point (heck, there definitely isn’t time). Instead, choose the one bathroom that your guests are most likely to use and quickly do a once over on the toilet, sink and faucet. Anything is better than you currently have, right?!
3. Piled up dishes.
If you have a dishwasher, GREAT! Hide any and all dishes in there (you can scrub off the scum later). If you don’t, simply stack them nicely. Your guests know that you eat, they know that dishes go along with this process, and as a result, they won’t be shocked by dishes. Just try your best to show some semblance of order.
4. Get to dusting.
Grab a paper towel and get to work. Forget every shelf, every table, every trinket. No time for that! Instead, think large surfaces of areas where your guests are likely to congregate (tables, countertops, etc.). Swipe, swipe… done in a mere couple minutes.
5. Garbage.
“I’m faking this whole clean house thing” will become very obvious if your garbage can is overflowing. If the lid can’t be closed, it’s time to toss out the bag and grab a new one!
6. Create a Welcoming Atmosphere
Last but not least, nothing says “now this is a clean house with a mama that has it all put together” more than a fresh, welcoming scent. That is why you NEED to give your guests the best first impression. Similar to the steps above, this one couldn’t be any easier. Simply grab your Glade® Atmosphere Collection™ Fine Fragrance Mist products (my favorites being No.1 Enraptured™ and No.2 Bright™ scents) and get to it!
Simply spray up and sweep side to side in every room for a fresh smelling room. It’s so easy to spray due to the continuous spray mechanism (unlike any other room spray pumps!) Why do I recommend this fragrance mist above others? Because the Glade® Atmosphere Collection™ Fine Home Fragrance is infused with essential oils and masterfully crafted. Furthermore, the fragrance and essential oils combination provides an experience comparative to high-end room spray, but for a fraction of the cost… SCORE!
And Just Like that… How to Clean House Fast!
DING DONG… they are here, time is up!
As you greet one another they mention how wonderful your clean house looks, and for being such a busy mom with kiddos at that. “Oh this,” you say with an internal grin, “this is just how we always live.” ;).
And just like that, you have officially and successfully learned how to clean house fast in under 10 minutes!
Congrats, mama! Happy hosting!

you sound exactly like my husband. I’m just opposite but whenever we are expecting guest and short of time. I ask my husband to use his Magic Wand. He makes the house shine under 15 mins. but please don’t open our wardrobe and master bedroom ensuite. LOL

Haha, your husband sounds amazing! Also, I love the “wardrobe and master bedroom” comment. I can SO relate!

Unless I am doing some really deep cleaning it really doesn’t take me long to clean the house. We keep everything picked up. Found you on Blogger Pit Stop.
Lindsay says
That is fantastic, Candy! We “try” to do this as well, but I feel like my old cleaning habits somewhat went out the window after our little toddler tornadoes. 😉

Thanks for sharing! Very great tips!

Cleaning a house fast becomes an art! I find anything the kids left out I just leave and focus on other areas. I mean guest or no guest, it will be back on the floor/counter in about 10min anyways.
