There it was… that big, open, underwhelming wall space staring back at me every time I entered and exited my home. I knew I wanted some form of an inspired farmhouse wood sign to accompany my previous wall decor (specifically the “Heaven” sign that has been in my family for years). However, I also knew I wanted the sign to be both simplistic and unique, but also to tie in elements of my pre-existing stain and woodwork. After many failed attempts to find what I was looking for, I finally decided to make my own farmhouse wood signs and I couldn’t be more happy that I did!

Here is How I made My Own Farmhouse Wood Signs
My project began with a solid piece of raw wood. (Boards available hereΒ and here.)Β After a little sanding, I decided to stain the sides (exact stainΒ here). While the stain didn’t match my ceiling beams and half-wall cap perfectly, I decided to embrace this by avoiding an overall “matchy-matchy” feel. I then painted the top of my wood board an off-white (exact paint here), determined what saying I wanted to display, and began to freehand paint the lettering (finishing touches completed with this paint pen here)!
I loved the way the farmhouse wood signs not only quickly finished off my wall space, but also allowed for a personalized feature. This led to my desire to create even more farmhouse wood signs and before I knew it, I had a collection!
Time to Hand Letter Your Signs
Don’t worry, the task of hand lettering (creatively writing) is far less intimidating than you may think. In fact, I have created an entire post that shows you exactly how you can learn to hand letter like a pro for FREE with very little time and effort. You can check it out here!
Shop Simply September Favorites
This collection led to me taking the next exciting leap in my Simply September adventure! After a number of very kind readers inquired about the ability to purchase final products when they weren’t in the mood/able to craft them themselves (Despite loving crafting, this is definitely something I can relate to as there often just isn’t enough time in the day to craft it all.), I decided to make this a possibility and open my own Etsy shop that goes by the name, “SimplySeptemberShop“.
From now on, a large number of Simply SeptemberΒ posts will not only provide creativity inspiration, tutorials and DIY tips and tricks as it has previously… but you will now also be able to view the items directly in my shop if you desire to purchase them for yourself!
UPDATE: Since this post was originally published, I have decided to take Simply September Shop in a different direction. Specifically, I am now designing and selling creative, fun, and comfortable clothing for women and children. With that said, if you are still interested in purchasing a custom sign (as shown above), please feel free to message me on Etsy and I would be more than happy to create a listing for you!

Hi Lindsay! These signs are lovely! I’ve been trying to make similar signs for my home but the paint I used (chalk paint) and/or brush I used made the surface have a lot of ridges and now I’m having trouble writing on it with my paint marker. What type of paint/brush did you use for the white paint and afterward did you use a paint marker or thin brush for the lettering?
Lindsay says
Hi Amy! I used a very standard cheap paintbrush that I’ve had for years and years. I purchased it from Michaels. Unfortunately, I don’t have a specific name for you, but I know it is nothing unique or special. I used a thin brush for the lettering and Craftsmart Satin Acrylic Paint for the background paint. While I love chalk paint, it often leaves a bumpy finish for me as well. I wish you the best of luck!
Breanna Walker says
Where did you find the boards with the edges like that? I love your work they are awesome!
Lindsay says
Thank you, Breanna :). My collection varies, but several were found at local craft stores like, Michaels.
Shelle says
What kind and thickness of wood did you use for the white main part of your sign and also do you know the measurements of the trim piece? How did you attach the trim? So so beautiful! You did a lovely job!
Lindsay says
Thank you so much, Shelle! The wood I used comes pre-trimmed so I actually donβt have to add this detail. The main thickness is about 1.5 inches!
Seantae says
Where did you get the wood for the signs?
Lindsay says
Michaels Craft Store π
Karil Gierum says
How did you learn to do the hand letters? They are beautiful- thank you!!
Lindsay says
Aw, thank you, Karil! To be honest, it was just a lot of trial and error over time ;).
